The Labour Court recommended a 3.5% increase in basic rates at Tara Mines Limited from 1 June 1987, as part of a 14-month agreement. The recommendation was signed on 30 October 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had sought a 7% increase, extra annual leave, subsidised meals or an equivalent allowance, and changes related to the bonus scheme. The Court did not recommend conceding the union’s other claims. It recommended that the company’s cost-reduction proposals be accepted, while the company withdrew its proposed earnings cap for the new bonus scheme and the union agreed to a constant rate of bonus increase across possible outputs. The Court cited the need to maintain continuity of employment.
