In 1987, the Labour Court recommended changes to the agreement between N. Hanlon (Ireland) Limited and the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union to support an early return to work after a dispute over lay-off and re-employment. The recommendation was signed on 30 October 1987. It proposed recognising the union's role in representing members and applying seniority where other factors were equal in lay-off or redundancy decisions. The dispute period would not break continuity of service, including for holidays. The company was to indicate a return date for eligible employees, process individual tax refunds as soon as possible and meet the union after work resumed to discuss a general wage claim. The Labour Court recommended that both sides accept the proposals in full.
