In 1987, the Labour Court found that an agreement between Chadwicks Limited and the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, No. 5 Branch, did not prevent another company from opening on the former Walkinstown branch site. It did not find in favour of the union’s claim. The recommendation was signed on 30 October 1987. The union argued the agreement reached after the branch closed guaranteed that trading would not resume there. It said Payless D.I.Y. Limited was part of the same group and former Chadwicks workers should have first refusal on jobs. About 40 jobs had been lost when the branch closed. Chadwicks said the agreement applied only to its own branches and Payless was a separate company.
