In 1987, the Labour Court found no valid grounds for the Amalgamated Engineering Union's appeal against Irish Rail's one-day unpaid suspension of two fitters. It did not recommend conceding the union's claim. The recommendation was signed on 29 October. Irish Rail said the fitters had failed to follow the required ground-level inspection procedure after a brake pin was later found missing. The union argued they had completed a proper check and that the penalty should be dropped.
