In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that tobacco-loft employees accept Douwe Egberts Limited's offer to settle their pay claim. The recommendation was signed on 22 October. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union sought Group 4 grading, or Group 2 plus a weekly productivity allowance of £9.49. It argued the new two-person operation generated savings and demanded work. Douwe Egberts said the changed work was easier and that a higher grade could disrupt its grading system.
