In 1987, the Labour Court recommended acceptance of Bord Gais Eireann's offer for a proposed 1987–88 flexibility agreement, rejecting the unions' case for ongoing salary increases. The recommendation was signed on 19 October 1987. The Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (TASS), the Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union argued that ongoing changes in flexibility and technology warranted salary increases. Bord Gais Eireann proposed lump-sum payments linked to targets. The Court said flexibility, transferability and adapting to technology were essential in a competitive industry, and recommended that the employer's offer be accepted.
