In 1987, the Labour Court recommended a 5% wage increase for eight workers at Smiths Building Supplies and talks on pension and sick-pay schemes. The recommendation was signed on 12 October 1987. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union had sought a 10% increase, a pension scheme, sick pay and compassionate leave. The Court recommended an increase from 1 June 1987, with the agreement running until 30 June 1988. It also recommended agreement in principle to a pension scheme, negotiations on a trial sick-pay scheme and acceptance of the company's offer of two days' compassionate leave after the death of a close relative.
