In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Hallmark Cards (Ireland) Limited increase its offer to 13% for six workers operating two machines, and that the workers accept the amended offer. The recommendation was signed on 5 October 1987. The Irish Print Union had sought a 20% increase, arguing that production had risen by 60%. Hallmark said its initial 10% offer reflected the gains from dual running while accounting for reduced machine capacity and costs. The Court found the union's compensation basis unsustainable but recommended adjusting the offer to 13%.
