The Labour Court recommended that Brooks Thomas Limited suspend a worker from 21 July to 31 October 1987, followed by three months’ probation, with full reinstatement if the worker completed it satisfactorily. The recommendation, in a dispute raised by the Marine Port and General Workers' Union, was signed on 28 September 1987. The Court said the company had not acted unreasonably and accepted that some malpractice occurred, but considered dismissal too serious a penalty. The worker, a porter and docket man, had loaded clotheslines onto a subcontractor’s lorry without documentation.
