In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the Central Bank and the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union begin negotiations on ending the pay relativity between the Bank's security guards and guards at the Associated Banks. The recommendation was signed on 24 September 1987. The union sought the same increases as Associated Banks guards. The Bank said public-sector pay guidelines applied and argued that private-sector parity was not appropriate or sustainable. The Court said the existing guidelines allowed too little flexibility to end the relativity and recommended that the parties agree a basis for future wage adjustments.
