In 1987, the Labour Court recommended a 5% pay increase for workers at Coyle Hamilton Limited, but did not recommend conceding a separate claim for a new technology payment. Its recommendation was signed on 9 September 1987. The Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs (Astms) sought an increase for approximately 140 workers. It argued that pay had fallen behind comparable companies and that new technology had increased workload and required greater effort and skills. Coyle Hamilton cited reduced commission income, increased insurance costs and the expense of investing in computer systems. The recommended 5% increase covered the period from 1 April 1987 to 30 June 1988.
