In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding union claims for a disturbance payment, commuter tickets and removal expenses for about 1,400 workers transferring to Beaumont Hospital from Jervis Street and Richmond Hospitals.
The recommendation was signed on 10 September 1987. The unions argued that the move would lengthen commutes for some staff and said workers expected a package to facilitate the transfer. Beaumont Hospital said the move was about four miles from the city centre and that the transferred staff had been guaranteed employment.
The hospital estimated the claim would cost £2.6 million in 1987 and argued that meeting it would require cuts to services and jobs. The Court rejected all three parts of the claim.
