The Labour Court recommended that Aer Lingus and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland (Fwui) agree revised night-duty rates for six assistant duty managers, using rates and duties for supervisors on similar rosters. It did not recommend conceding the union's claim for additional time off. The recommendation was signed on 21 August 1987. The managers worked seven night shifts in each 42-day roster and received a £13.01 nightly allowance and an extra day off after night duty. Fwui argued their responsibilities warranted higher pay and that the day off only compensated them for missed breaks. Aer Lingus said they were senior staff with high basic pay and additional earnings, and that a ramp agent could cover their breaks. The Court found the difference between their duties and those of technical supervisors no longer justified different rates.
