In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Chadwicks Limited concede full negotiating rights to the Association of Scientific Technical and Managerial Staffs (Astms) for members in specified categories. The recommendation was signed on 30 July 1987. Astms said it had recruited members among sales and credit control staff at the company's Dublin branch. Chadwicks said adding a third union would complicate its industrial relations structure and place further demands on personnel. A hearing took place in Dublin on 16 July.
