The Labour Court recommended that Irish Cement Limited commit to filling at least half of future “3 in 1” vacancies with applicants from its general or clerical workforce. The recommendation was signed on 27 July 1987. The dispute followed Irish Cement Limited’s appointment of a craftsman to the shift role, which the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union contested. The Court said the company could select the best worker regardless of category, while noting that the history of appointments had given workers some basis to expect a general operative to fill the position. It also recommended that the union accept and co-operate with the current jobholder.
Labour Court recommends 50% of future Irish Cement shift vacancies go to general or clerical applicants
