In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that BERGER PAINTS LIMITED’s conciliation offer be accepted: a 5.5% pay increase for 12 months from 1 January, plus two extra days’ leave based on service for about 29 employees. The recommendation was signed on 26 June 1987. The IRISH TRANSPORT AND GENERAL WORKERS' UNION had sought a 15% increase, more leave, shorter hours, higher service pay and paternity leave. Management and the union supported the conciliation offer, but workers narrowly rejected it in a ballot. The Court considered the offer reasonable and recommended its acceptance.
