Labour Court recommends £250 each for two Irish Industrial Gases workers

In 1987, the Labour Court recommended £250 each for two “spare” workers at Irish Industrial Gases after staffing at its Dissolved Acetylene plant fell from eight to seven. The recommendation was signed on 25 June 1987. The IRISH TRANSPORT AND GENERAL WORKERS' UNION had sought compensation for all seven remaining operatives, citing lost overtime and changed duties. The Court found the staffing reduction had not significantly changed general work requirements and did not recommend a general payment. It considered the “middle” worker compensated by keeping his shift allowance and found no basis for other payments.
