In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club recognise the MARINE PORT AND GENERAL WORKERS' UNION’s right to negotiate for its members among the club’s staff. The recommendation was signed on 24 June 1987. The club employed about 20 workers, eight of whom had joined the union. Management declined to attend the hearing and said the union did not represent the general staff. The union had agreed to be bound by the Court’s recommendation, which also called on it to tell management which workers were members.
