In 1987, the Labour Court recommended changes to the bonus scheme at Wilson & McBrinn Limited after the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union said tougher targets had reduced machinists' earnings. The recommendation was signed on 3 April 1987. The union said workers lost between £20 and £40 a week in September 1985 despite a running-in allowance. Wilson & McBrinn said the new time standards were intended to protect the company's viability and jobs, and it could make no further concessions. The Court recommended average earnings during machine breakdowns lasting more than an hour when alternative bonus work was unavailable. It also recommended linking the policy allowance to pay, capped at a 5% annual increase from 1987, but did not recommend the union's proposed phasing allowance.
