The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the unions' claim for behavioural psychotherapy to be recognised as a distinct specialisation in psychiatric nursing, or for a £1,000 qualification allowance. The recommendation was signed on 30 March 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, Psychiatric Nurses Association and Federated Workers' Union of Ireland brought the claim on behalf of psychiatric nurses working in the Health Boards. The Court found behavioural therapy was an integral part of psychiatric nursing and said the claim should be considered in planned management discussions about the service.
