In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Hotel Westport and the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union begin negotiations on the hotel's offer to buy out its Christmas bonus system. The recommendation was signed on 18 January 1987. The union said workers were entitled to the bonus, which they had received for several years, and rejected the employer's one-off offer. Hotel Westport said the bonus had compensated for overtime, which was now paid separately. The Court considered the bonus no longer appropriate after wages and conditions were formalised under Joint Labour Committee terms.
