In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union accept conciliation proposals for Wellman International Limited's 26th wage round, as amended by the company on 1 December 1986. The recommendation was signed on 29 January 1987 and covered claims on behalf of about 280 workers. The union sought a 12% pay rise and changes to grade pay, attendance bonuses, shift allowances and supplementary hours. It argued that workers' rates were low and sought increases beyond the conciliation proposals. Wellman cited trading difficulties and the need to keep production costs competitive. The Court found the amended proposals fair and reasonable.
