In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Tara Mines Limited raise its rock-bolters’ rest allowance from 14.5% to 15.7% while the sides gathered information on comparable work and rest periods. The recommendation was signed on 8 January 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had argued that the allowance was inadequate and sought 43% for 24 Miner 1 workers installing Swellex roof bolts. Tara Mines said the mechanised installation was easier and that workers’ bonus earnings had risen. The Court noted that both sides agreed the new bolts had not affected the work, and that they remained far apart on suitable allowances.
