Labour Court rejects unions’ claims for UCD craftsmen’s meal allowance and bus fares

Labour Court ·

In 1986, the Labour Court recommended against claims by the National Union of Woodcutters and Woodcutting Machinists and the Irish National Painters’ and Decorators’ Trade Union for bus fares and an eating-on-site allowance for maintenance craftsmen at University College Dublin. The recommendation was signed on 10 October 1986. The unions sought the payments for carpenters and painters, pointing to benefits received by electricians and the workers’ short lunch break. The college said the groups had separate agreements and that bus fares were not normally paid for travel between home and work. The Court said payments agreed for one group did not by themselves justify extending them to another, and it was not satisfied that the workers’ duties differed from those of plumbers and general workers. It did not recommend conceding the meal allowance claim and found no basis to recommend bus fares.
