In 1986, the Labour Court recommended that Gernord Gerflex Limited, represented by the Federated Union of Employers, and the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union resume discussions on productivity, with or without help from a third party. The recommendation was signed on 10 October 1986. The Court said output of 565 boxes per line should be accepted. The company said that figure was the agreed output per line per day and that a line problem had been fixed. The union disputed that it had agreed to the figure for all three lines and sought negotiations on increased productivity and compensation. The Court noted the company's willingness to discuss productivity above 565 boxes per line and the union's view that productivity had increased.
