The WRC recommended that a hospital pay a pre-registration nurse €15,000 after delays in investigating her grievance and dismissal appeal. The recommendation was dated 4 July 2023.
The nurse said she had not been given an opportunity to appeal her dismissal and that the Nursing and Midwifery Board later upheld her appeal. She said delays in receiving documents contributed to her work permit expiring and her return to her home country. She sought compensation for lost earnings and stress.
The hospital cited resource constraints for the delay. By the second WRC hearing, the parties had appointed an independent investigator and committed to continuing the investigation without further unnecessary delay.
The WRC recommended that the grievance be investigated to a conclusion in a timely manner and that the hospital pay €15,000 compensation within 12 weeks.
