Labour Court rejects Joe Stanley's fixed-term employment appeal

The Labour Court disallowed Joe Stanley's appeal and affirmed the Rights Commissioner's decision that he was not a fixed-term employee of the Irish Museum of Modern Art. The determination was issued on 6 May 2014.

Stanley worked as a technician on exhibition-related jobs and argued that each engagement ended when a particular exhibition finished. The Museum said he was a permanent casual employee. The Court found that the engagements ended when the Museum decided his services were no longer needed, not automatically when a task was completed. It concluded that he was not employed under a series of fixed-term contracts and lacked standing to maintain the complaints.
