The Labour Court rejected a worker's appeal against a Rights Commissioner's finding that her complaint about an ex gratia redundancy payment was not well-founded. The determination was signed on 8 April 2014. The worker argued that comparable permanent employees in the higher education sector received four weeks' pay per year of service on top of statutory redundancy. A UNIVERSITY said its permanent staff received statutory redundancy only. The Court found that an internal permanent employee who was made redundant in 2008 was a valid comparator and had also received no ex gratia payment. It therefore found the worker's complaint not well-founded and affirmed the Rights Commissioner's decision.
