The Labour Court overturned the Rights Commissioner's decision and €500-per-nurse awards in the HSE Dublin Mid-Leinster's appeal over eight nurses' fixed-term contracts. The decision was signed on 6 December 2010. The nurses, represented by the Irish Nurses' & Midwives' Organisation, had challenged contracts that did not specify minimum weekly hours. The Rights Commissioner had found for them and directed the HSE to stop issuing those contracts. The Labour Court found the nurses had been offered two-year, full-time contracts that the HSE ended early. It held that the law did not give them the same entitlement as permanent employees to the duration of their contracts, and set aside the earlier decision.
