In 2000, Equality Officer Gerardine Coyle rejected equal-pay claims by Marguerite Burke and Sharon Gleeson against Van den Bergh Foods Limited. The recommendation was dated 6 April 2000. S.I.P.T.U. argued the women did similar work to male machine operators Paddy Craddock and Stephen Keddy but received lower pay. The company said their jobs differed. Coyle found Burke and Gleeson worked at the packing end of machines, while Craddock and Keddy operated them and their work made greater demands in skill, physical effort, responsibility and working conditions. The claimants were not entitled to the same rates of remuneration.
