Labour Court awards Brenda Corcoran €9,000 for gender discrimination

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

In 2003, the Labour Court found that Assico Assembly Limited discriminated against Brenda Corcoran on gender grounds when it dismissed her after she disclosed her pregnancy. The Court awarded her €9,000 compensation and rejected her family-status discrimination claim. The determination was dated 21 January.

Corcoran said she was dismissed because she was pregnant. The company said it acted over her work performance and attendance, and that it had decided to dismiss her before learning of the pregnancy. The Court found that her work was inadequate in some areas, but the company had not conveyed the seriousness of its concerns. It also found that no firm decision or dismissal date had been established before she disclosed her pregnancy. The company had not shown exceptional reasons for dismissal unrelated to pregnancy.
