In 2001, the Labour Court found that a computer component company discriminated against a worker by dismissing her because of her disability and awarded her £15,000 compensation. The determination was signed on 18 July 2001.
The worker, a packer, had been employed from 13 October to 2 December 1999. The company said it dismissed her on medical advice after learning of her epilepsy. The Court noted that the written medical report said her condition presented no problem for her work, and that the company dismissed her before receiving it. The company also did not assess workplace safety, discuss its concerns with her or consider adjustments to the work.
The Court found that the dismissal was discrimination and awarded compensation for lost earnings and distress. The worker was represented by the Equality Authority.
