The Labour Court reduced compensation for age discrimination against Glenn Sheppard from €12,500 to €6,000, while rejecting his claim of discriminatory dismissal. The determination was signed on 3 April 2018 after Jewelstar Designs Limited appealed the Equality Officer’s decision.

Sheppard worked for the Dublin jewellery business for about 12.5 working days in 2014. He said director Wayne Knowles made age-related remarks, including that he would not have hired him had he known his age. Knowles denied the conversation and said he dismissed Sheppard because of his attitude. The Court found, on the balance of probabilities, that Knowles had made the remarks. It awarded €6,000 for the discrimination and varied the earlier award. The Court found no case of discriminatory dismissal, accepting that the dismissal was related to Sheppard’s attitude.
