Labour Court upholds €8,000 race discrimination award to Zanetta Zimareva

The Labour Court upheld an €8,000 compensation award to Zanetta Zimareva after dismissing Boxmore Plastics Ltd’s appeal over a race discrimination finding. The determination was dated 30 November 2017.

Zimareva asked for an interpreter at a workplace grievance meeting, but Boxmore refused, relying on its procedure, which allowed a union representative or colleague. The Court found the English-only process disadvantaged her by preventing full participation, and ruled that the refusal amounted to indirect race discrimination. It rejected the company’s justification for excluding an interpreter as disproportionate. The €8,000 was compensation for the effects of discrimination, not remuneration.
