The Labour Court rejected a secondary school teacher’s age discrimination appeal over a deputy principal appointment. Its determination was signed on 31 August 2017.
The teacher and the school’s board of management brought cross-appeals over the adjudication officer’s decision. She said age affected the 2014 competition; the successful candidate was 16 years younger. The Court criticised the principal’s briefing to the interview panel and her decision to give references to two candidates without disclosing this to the panel. It found, however, that panel members assessed candidates independently and that their marks did not correlate with age. The complaint was not well founded and the appeal was rejected.
