Labour Court raises gender discrimination award to €8,000 on Tiina Villi’s appeal

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court increased compensation for gender discrimination against security guard Tiina Villi from €6,000 to €8,000 on her appeal, while affirming an order that G4S Secure Solutions ( Ire ) Limited place her on a roster matching her contract. The Court signed its determination on 21 June 2017.

Villi, who had worked as a security guard since 2002, said that after a suspension in August 2015 she received fewer hours than male colleagues despite her 40-hour contract. She said a less experienced male colleague had been assigned to her full-time position. G4S did not contest the discrimination finding but argued that the original compensation was adequate, saying her financial loss had been addressed separately.

The Labour Court affirmed the gender discrimination finding and the roster order, and varied compensation from €6,000 to €8,000. The Court found that Villi had established facts from which discrimination could be inferred and that G4S had not proved otherwise. It declined to take G4S’s financial circumstances into account when setting compensation.
