The Labour Court dismissed Linda Brennan’s appeal against an Equality Tribunal decision rejecting her discrimination claim against Willis Risk Services (Ireland) Ltd. The Court’s determination was dated 9 May 2014.

Brennan, a part-time Compliance Manager, argued that irregularities in the selection process for a full-time Head of Compliance role suggested the panel favoured the successful candidate because she was unmarried and had no children. Willis Risk Services said the candidate had relevant experience and qualifications, and that panel members did not know her civil or family status.

The Court accepted the panel witnesses’ account of how interview marks were agreed, finding the marking system could not support an inference of discrimination. It also accepted that panel members were unaware of the successful candidate’s civil and family status. The Court affirmed the Equality Tribunal decision and disallowed Brennan’s appeal.
