The Labour Court raised Edgars Grods’s victimisation compensation from €1,000 to €2,500 and rejected his appeal over race discrimination. Its determination was signed on 17 May 2010.
Grods, a Latvian steel fixer, said Toker Developments Limited paid him less than workers of other nationalities and treated him less favourably in his employment conditions. The Court found no evidence that differences in pay or treatment were related to race or nationality; some workers were paid marginally more than Grods and others marginally less.
The Court varied the compensation because it found the original award inadequate. Toker Developments Limited had refused to consider Grods for re-employment after redundancy, citing his referral of complaints to the Equality Tribunal. Grods did not pursue his harassment claim on appeal.
