The Labour Court affirmed the Equality Officer’s finding and disallowed Mark Savage’s appeal over alleged gender discrimination in recruitment by Lantern Securities Limited. The determination was signed on 31 January 2008.
Savage said he was not offered a security officer job because he wore his long hair tied in a bun, and that a woman would have been treated differently. The Court found the neat-hair requirement was no more restrictive for him than for women, and his hair did not influence the hiring decision. It accepted that the successful applicant had greater relevant experience. A later job offer was made in good faith, the Court found, but Savage declined it.
