In 1993, the Labour Court upheld an Equality Officer’s recommendation rejecting an equal-pay claim by 12 female employees of Cahill May Roberts Limited. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had appealed on their behalf, seeking the rate paid to a comparator. After hearing both sides and examining the work at the company, the Court found that the comparator’s job involved greater physical effort and responsibility, and different working conditions. It held those differences justified the difference in pay. The determination was dated 15 June 1993.
