In 2000, the Labour Court dismissed prison officer Patrick Jordan's appeal against the Equality Officer's recommendation that the Department Of Justice, Equality & Law Reform had not discriminated against him in a promotion competition. The determination was signed on 30 May 2000.
Jordan argued that the promotion process favoured women, citing the proportion of interviewed women and men who were promoted, as well as interview questions, the all-male board and marking. The Court found the competition was conducted fairly and the result reflected an objective assessment of candidates. It also said there was nothing to suggest the all-male board discriminated against a male candidate.
