Equality Tribunal rejects age discrimination claim over two lecturer competitions

By Saoirse Doyle

Workplace decision ·

The Equality Tribunal found that a third-level institution did not discriminate against a complainant on age grounds in two lecturer competitions. Equality Officer Marian Duffy dated the decision 28 March 2012. The complainant said he was more qualified than the younger candidate selected for both posts and alleged that interview questions and the selection process were discriminatory. The institution said the interviews followed Department of Education procedures and candidates were assessed against nine criteria. Duffy found the competitions were linked and within the time limit. On the merits, she found no evidence that age influenced either selection. The successful candidate scored higher in both competitions, and the interview boards were properly constituted and acted professionally. The complaint failed.
