Equality Officer rejects receptionist’s discriminatory dismissal complaint

By Niamh Kearney

Workplace decision ·

The Equality Tribunal found that a medical consultant did not discriminate against a receptionist when dismissing her. Equality Officer Marian Duffy dated the decision 13 May 2011. The receptionist said the consultant dismissed her after opening a package addressed to her at the practice. The consultant said she was concerned the material could damage the practice’s reputation. The race and conditions of employment complaints were withdrawn at the hearing. The Equality Officer found no connection between the dismissal and the receptionist’s marital or family status and found no less favourable treatment on those grounds. The discriminatory dismissal complaint failed.
