WRC rejects three complaints over unpaid journalism placement

The Workplace Relations Commission rejected Fionn Shannon’s complaints for wages, minimum wage and minimum notice against Clare Community Radio Holdings PLC, finding he was not an employee. The decision was dated 7 August 2025. Shannon argued that his unpaid placement involved producing scripts for weekday programmes and said he was offered €600 to continue the work after it ended. The company said the placement was an unpaid academic arrangement under a university learning agreement. The adjudicator found the agreement set out an unpaid learning arrangement, with learning objectives rather than employment duties, and no agreement to compensation.
