The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Donal Finnegan €26,000 for unfair dismissal and €3,440 for a breach of employment terms in a decision dated 18 August 2025.
Finnegan challenged his redundancy dismissal by Liffeyfield Limited, trading as Bonnington Hotel. The hotel said the role was genuinely redundant because work and finances had declined. The WRC found there was no evidence supporting the financial rationale, and that the hotel had not consulted meaningfully, applied a fair selection process or considered alternative work. It concluded the redundancy was not genuine and upheld the unfair dismissal complaint. The €26,000 award took account of €8,002 already paid and a deduction for limited efforts to find work. The Commission also upheld his complaint that the hotel had not provided written terms of employment.
