The WRC allowed Amber Dorey’s complaint against the University Of Galway over an unpaid redundancy payment. The award is a redundancy lump sum calculated using gross weekly pay of €917.11, and is subject to the employment being insurable for all purposes under social welfare law. The decision is dated 14 August 2024.
Dorey, a former post-doctoral researcher, said the university had not paid the redundancy sum after her fixed-term job ended. She said repeated requests had not resolved the delay, which also affected her ability to claim jobseekers benefit. The university accepted that a payment was owed and apologised for errors and delays.
The university said Dorey had been omitted from its state sanction list in error while on maternity leave. It also said her previous redundancy payment meant the later calculation had to be revised downwards and that it was waiting for her to choose between payment options. The adjudicator confined the complaint to the failure to pay a redundancy sum; the separate higher-payment request raised at the hearing was outside the complaint before the WRC.
