Melissa Murphy’s unfair dismissal complaint against River Poppintree Trade Ltd fails

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found that Melissa Murphy was not unfairly dismissed by River Poppintree Trade Ltd. The decision was dated 31 October 2024, and no award was recorded. Murphy said she was taken off the roster after calling in sick and being asked to provide a doctor’s note. The employer said the note was required before she could return to food preparation work and offered her job back if she supplied one. The adjudicator found that request reasonable and said Murphy’s refusal to provide a note led to her work ending. Two complaints about written employment terms were found not well founded after Murphy accepted she had received the relevant documents. A third complaint, about written notice of changes to her terms, was outside the six-month time limit, so the merits were not decided.
