WRC rejects gender discrimination claims against Press Photographers Ireland

The Workplace Relations Commission found that photographer Norma Burke’s claims of direct and indirect gender discrimination against Press Photographers Ireland CLG were not well founded. Adjudication Officer Kara Turner issued the decision, dated 25 October 2024.

Burke said the association discriminated in communications about joining and through its membership criteria. The association disputed that it was covered by equality law and argued that Burke had not applied for membership.

The adjudicator found that the association provided services to working press photographers, but found no evidence linking its communications to less favourable treatment because of gender. Its criteria allowed part-time and freelance photographers whose main income came from press photography; the evidence did not show that female press photographers were disadvantaged by them.
