WRC rejects University of Galway lecturer’s discrimination complaint over promotion

The Workplace Relations Commission found a University of Galway lecturer’s age and gender discrimination complaint over a failed promotion application not well founded. Its decision was dated 26 August 2025. Mary Dempsey argued that the university should have accounted for career barriers from earlier discrimination when assessing her application for Professor. The university said it used structured criteria and that age and gender did not affect the outcome. The adjudicator found she had not established a prima facie case of discrimination.
