WRC awards €1,000 in housing assistance discrimination case

The Workplace Relations Commission found landlord Elaine Reily discriminated against tenant Gareth Flynn on the housing assistance ground by failing to complete a Housing Assistance Payment application form. It ordered €1,000 compensation in a decision dated 3 July 2023.

Flynn said he repeatedly sought the landlord’s signature and contacted Threshold for help. Reily said the apartment was assigned to her brother, who was named on the letting agreement and received the rent. The WRC found Reily was responsible for signing the form because she provided the accommodation. The housing assistance ground protects people receiving housing support from discrimination in accommodation.
